It's snowing. No, not just snowing. It's snowing horizontally and has been since around 8 this morning. There is what looks like a bulldozer with a plow attachment making constant rounds through the Red Hat parking lot, producing trails of concrete and ice through a field of snow two feet deep.

By the time this exam is over I am seriously concerned about getting my car out of its parking space (the ones I can see from the window are almost buried) let alone making it home in one piece.

Damn you, [livejournal.com profile] choose_again and your being-in-California-ness!!!

I'm not sure whether you know about this one since I think this is your first Somerville winter, but when you get home, remember not to park on the "even" side of the road. Somerville declared a snow emergency this morning.

maybe you can explain this. i worte this email to somerville after reading your link.

I just moved here from california and i am concerned that a snow emergency has been called. i understand the new parking regulations, but i can not find the info anywhere that explains why this is an emergency! i am very concerned that there is an effect of the snow that i am not understanding that requires us to be in city-wide alert! please respond asap with an explaination about what constitutes a snow emergency and why it is called an emergency if it just means the city needs to plow. thank you!

I'm not really sure. I hadn't thought about why they were using that terminology, but I think it's probably to get people to recognize that it is actually a problem.

Because a lot of the Somerville streets are not very wide, it makes it basically impossible to plow if people are parked on both sides of the road. To avoid damage to the cars (being hit by the plow probably really sucks), it's advisable to do what they want you to do with your car.

Also, the roads aren't great right now, so the term makes people remember to drive more carefully or not drive at all.

Anyway, it's actually stopped snowing by now, so the roads should be in the process of being cleaned up. It is kinda gross out there though. I hadn't seen a thunder+lightning snowstorm before now.

i asked my mom and she said that it was probably because people were supposed to stop what they were doing and move their cars right away, that if enough cars weren't moved it could be a real emergency, and that employers were supposed to let their employees leave to move their cars so it needed an impressive word.

thanks for the info. this is nerve-wracking. and thanks for keeping brad uptodate about his car.

I think you should be able to make it home (although, you are likely already home now). And, I have to admit, I could nearly hear you speaking as I read this. I couldn't stop giggling, pretty much from the, "It's snowing horizontally . . ." on.
