Ok, you know all those times when I posted and said something along the lines of "this is the coolest thing ever!".

Forget them.

This is the coolest thing ever.

Update: Grrr. That link now goes to a "someone is stealing our bandwidth" page. Aaagh! C'mon people. Linking to your friggin site (in a way that displays ads and everything) does not constitute stealing your bandwidth. =:\ Anyway, go to newgrounds.com and search for "mario physics". You will not be disappointed.

"Hey, Mario - I bet you can't break the sound barrier."

SWEET!

That is, in fact, the coolest thing ever.

on a completely unrelated note, watching the new Dr. Who series (which was really fantastic) almost kind of makes me want to watch the older stuff. Coming from having never seen the older stuff, will I be frightfully disappointed watching it now, or is it still good?

Fanboy powers... ACTIVATE!

If you were ok with the mediocre special effects and rampant pseudo-science for the sake of a fun, character-driven Sci-Fi show then I think you will like the original. The new series is making an effort to be more hip and less goofy than the original, but they still have a very similar feel. My first reaction to the new series was that it was "bad in all the right ways". =:)

A few differences to remember:

  1. New show: Decent budget, Old show: Ummm... less so.
  2. (corollary) New show: Mediocre CGI, Old show: Bad paper mache'
  3. While the new show had a couple of two-parters, the original was all serialized, usually into four 1/2-hour parts per episode, so they're much longer.
  4. The original ran for ~25 years straight, so of course there are going to be peaks and valleys in the quality. Netflix has a bunch of them, but they're almost all from the "key to time" season, which I think are mostly sub-par episodes. Also stay away from the first half of Sylvester McCoy's run and, despite him being a good Doctor IMO, almost all of Colin Baker's eps.
  5. The pathos that the new series plays on so much (and which Eccleston does so well) is less overstated in the original series. They didn't really try to make the Doctor a dark, tormented character until the second half of the 7th doc's run.

I recently downloaded Remembrance of the Daleks, one of Sylvester McCoy's (7th Doc's) best episodes and can give you a copy.

demonoid.co.uk lets you download entire runs (ie all of the Xth doctor) if you're feeling really ambitious.

Outpost Gallifrey has reviews and an uber-episode guide.

This site has fan rankings of everything DW, though I personally disagree with some of their results. They rank poor Colin Baker below Paul McGann who, though very good, only played the Doc in a horrible American TV Movie and some radio adventures. I also remember being unimpressed when I saw "The Talons of Weng Chieng", which is listed as the #1 episode, but hey, that was 10 years ago. Maybe I should re-watch it.

The BBC's official site has another episode guide.

I also just found this site, which maintains fan ratings of every show in existence.

Anyway, have fun. =:)
