Jun. 5th, 2005 02:17 pmIdunno if many people here are cellphone geeks, but I've got a bit of a n00b question in case anyone here knows...
My dad is planning to spend a few months in Europe and wants to get a phone that he can just put a foreign SIM card in and have as a local phone while he's over. However, it seems that most phones come "locked", which prevents you from doing this. Apparently the process can be reversed, but he's only talked to people at the Cingular store, who were unsurprisingly hesitant to give him any details.
So:
Thanks!

So:
- How can you tell if a phone is locked/unlocked?
- Can any phone be unlocked?
- What's the best way to get a phone unlocked?
Thanks!

Date: 2005-06-06 02:26 pm (UTC)Some cellphones can lock/unlock through the interface (only certain motorollas as I understand), some can't. But, you'd still need to be able to get the new SIM programmed, unless you're talking about having someone in europe program the SIM legitimately. *shrugs* Check out the old motorolla phone T720/T720i. I can't guaruntee but I'm almost positive its unlocked.
