Damn you, [livejournal.com profile] heligekuh for giving me that copy of Anacronox! I haven't been hooked on a game for a long time now. I'm a grown up. I don't stay up until 2am running around doing errands for thugs and revolutionaries in an alien slum! Really! I don't!

Wow. I didn't expect *that* to be the game that sucked you in. It works fine on your Radhat laptop?

And if you ever find that the game is trying your patience, you can just download the whole plot as a film instead! It's spoiler-tastic!

Yeah, I was surprised too. I think it's a combination of the fact that it actually runs on my not-made-for-gaming laptop (and yes, almost flawlessly under Wine) and that it's a lot better than I was expecting it to be. The visual style of the game is really nice, especially considering the primitive engine. The writing and, shock of all shocks, voice acting is also surprisingly good. It's made me laugh at a number of places, which is a rare thing for a game to do. Plus, any RPG that is consistently entertaining for 5+ hours with only about three fight sequences is a feat in its self.

I'm sure there are more engrossing games out there but they all either wouldn't run on my system regardless of OS (anything made in the last two years) don't run under Wine (Planescape), run irritatingly slow on my machine (Neverwinter), or are toys than "games" in the sense we're talking about (tuxracer et al).

But hey, at least I like what I've got.

Just keep in perspective that it's six years old, so don't expect it to be too pretty by today's standards. But if you can find it at all anymore then it will be at a bargain-bin price, which it's definitely worth.

But it is smooth, and certianly pretty by the PS1 Final Fantasy standard.
