JCC Music Rec: Jean Grae
Feb. 8th, 2015 02:14 pmI plan to post periodic signal-boosts of the many great new artists I discovered on the JoCo cruise, and since I'm listening to her right now, I might as well start with one of my unexpected favorites. Jean Grae is hard to classify. While her live show, which was my introduction to her, was mostly hip hop she also has a beautiful, soulful singing voice, and as I've just found out, her one album so far (which has the excellent title "That's not how you do that either: Yet another instructional album for adults, by Jean Grae", is... something else entirely, and also great. I'm kinda in love with this track in particular:

If you ever get a chance to see her live, don't expect anything that sounds like this, but GO SEE HER. Hip hop isn't exactly my main genre, but I loved it, as much because of her amazing audience mojo, the likes of which I have never seen before (which is a lot coming from a Jason Webley fan) as the music. She holds an audience in the palm of her hand, and is just a damn lot of fun. Plus, if you get to talk to her later ask her to tell you the story of the crazy-long straw. :)
