There's an artist that I've been enjoying lately by the name of Jason Webley. His style is this sort of amorphous mix of styles ranging from folk to klezmer to punk, which results in a sound that is original and definitely modern, but retains a lot its traditional roots at the same time. A lot of his stuff is available to sample on his website. The song that initially facinated me is called "Icarus". It's track four of his latest album, which can be listened to in its entirety here. This song absolutely blew me away. While I have been acquiring a taste for the rest of the album and have reached the point where other songs from it are now stuck in my head more often than Icarus is, it's still the highlight of the album for me. A such, I don't know if I'm doing Mr. Webley any favors or not by suggesting that people check it out in particulr, but hey, what the heck. Check it out. =:)

The reason I'm mentioning this now is that it's come to my attention that Mr. Webley is playing Saturday night at 924 Gilman Street's "Punk Prom" (where, it seems, the tradition is to come dressed prom-style though that is optional). Should be fun. The show starts at 6 and I'm flying into Oakland that day at 6:40, so hopefully I can make it by 7. He's playing fourth out of five bands, so that should work out. If anyone would care to join me (and, I assume, Lizbeth -- I sort of forgot to ask her about going straight from the airport to Gilman) then I'll see you there!

P.S. If all this hadn't convinced you to check him out, I give you...

Come on, you know you want to know what this sounds like. =:)

I'm pretty sure he played at burning man in center camp last year, and rocked the casbah.

it's pleasantly unsurprising that he was at the whole earth festival in davis last week.

I walked by him playing at Interzone in Corvallis one night while I was in grad school. It was. . . different.
