My friend Ian is kickstarting the third installment of the Doctor Atlantis series of graphic novels, for which he's the writer. I signal boosted the kickstarter that funded the creation of the series and now I'm signal boosting it again. When Doctor Atlantis #1 came out, our local comic store put it on their staff picks shelf, and just a glance at Carl Mefferd's amazing art is enough to see why. I seriously adore the art in this series, which manages to ooze classic charm without feeling derivative.
The story (with the caveat that I haven't yet read volume 2, which I'll be getting through this kickstarter) is a steampunky tale of Victorian British bombast that revels in the over-the-top nature of such stories without completely ignoring the problematic (yeah, I said the word-- deal with it) tropes that such settings entail. One of my favorite bits in volume one is a moment where the main character's genre-required native sidekick, after quickly picking up a smattering of English only to be lectured on the finer points of grammar, makes a snarky aside in his own language. When pressed for a translation, he replies "I say, I learn you tongue better than you learn mine", to which his erstwhile lecturer is appropriately flustered.
So, here's their kickstarter. Give it a look and see if it's worth throwing a couple bucks their way?
