It's oldish news now, but in case anyone missed it, the guy who killed Darius Simmons (the teen shot by his elderly neighbor while taking out the trash because said neighbor had been robbed and Simmons was black, so...) has been sentenced to life in prison (the max allowed in WI). It's a pretty hollow-feeling victory because the guy is old and ill, but there it is.

On a related note, the reason I know this is because when the story first broke I set up a Google alert for it, so I get an email when it comes up in the news again. They're crazy useful for following stories past the initial buzz. Book mark this, y'all:

I think these sentences are more about how they reflect the values of the community than pursuing direct eye-for-an-eye suffering or rehabilitative effect.
