I've been pondering doing a sort of sampler showing of classic Who, one episode per Doctor, for M, who has only seen the new series except for a couple of Tom Bakers.

As I expect there are some scholars of the show who may have Important Opinions on this, I would like to open suggestions for episode selection to the floor. Here's what I've got off the top of my head...

Hartnell: The Sensorites (too long? I remember it being quite good... would Unearthly Child + Caves of Fatal Death (or whatever the next one's called) be better?)

Troughton: I don't have as much experience with his era as I'd like. Tomb of the Cybermen is good, campy fun. I remember War Games being good, but maybe a 10-parter is not the best choice. Other suggestions?

Pertwee: The Mind of Evil is longish, but I remember it being quite good. I've also heard that Planet of the Spiders is good, but I've only seen the last ep, which would of course be a good lead-in for...

Baker^1: Hmm... we may actually give him a miss, since M's already seen a couple at the Brattle, and there are so many to pick from. Still open to suggestions.

Davison: Hmm... The Dalek One? The one with the time-sensitive lion dudes? Caves of Androzani? Can you tell I'm too lazy to look up proper titles at this point?

Baker^2: Argh, ever frustrating. I think C.Baker was a great doctor plagued by crap stories. The Mysterious Planet, perhaps? Together M and I could seek the habitats of the Canidian Goose...

McCoy: Also frustrating because then the series got good again... Revelation of the Daleks? Silver Nemesis? Battlefield?

Oh! I was going to suggest Tommy or Quadrophenia, and then I realized you were talking about *Doctor* Who. I get it!

Pass on T. Baker?!

I am mostly in agreement with you on all of this. Except skipping T. Baker. I suggest a T. Baker trifecta: Robots of Death, Pirate Planet, Invisible Enemy. He is deserving of 3.

A couple other thoughts...

Hartnell: Start at the beginning. Watch the pilot with the cavemen planet episodes and then unearthly child. That first title sequence alone are worth these viewings.

Davison: Resurrection of the Daleks = Yes. Maybe also Terminus? I can't remember if it was really good or really bad - but either way the name sticks in my head. You could also watch the short special video with Davison and Tennant if you haven't seen it already. But that would just be for fun and wouldn't count.

And you're going to skip McGann? I think anyone watching the show currently should be required to pay their dues and watch that damn tv movie. I don't remember what it was about - something involving a clock and a countdown. But then, what Dr. Who show didn't involve "time."

And after all of this, she will be allowed to watch Doctors 9-13 in CURSE OF THE FATAL DEATH!!!

My 2 Cents,
Dave in WC

Nothing against Ol' Tom, it's just that the object of the exercise is to introduce her to the classic Doctors she hasn't yet seen.

As for McGann... I'll take that under advisement.

Planet of the Spiders is probably what gave me my Spider phobia.

The Green Death is a splendid Pertwee Bessie and Unit and Jo Grant in it - it is made of win!

A few suggestions:

Troughton: It's a pity that The Invasion is so long because it's really good, and features Zoe breaking a computer with logic, and the Brigadier's first appearance with UNIT - http://www.bbc.co.uk/doctorwho/classic/episodeguide/invasion/

Pertwee - I'll give you two - The Claws of Axos is a four parter that is just everything lovely about freaked-out psychedelic 60's Britain - http://www.bbc.co.uk/doctorwho/classic/episodeguide/clawsofaxos/
The Three Doctors isn't a standard Dr. Who serial - but it is such loving Dr. Who fanservice, it has a heart bigger than any other Pertwee serial. And it is written by Bob Baker who would go on to write the Wallace and Grommit shorts and you can *see* it in this one. http://www.bbc.co.uk/doctorwho/classic/episodeguide/threedoctors/

Davison: Enlightenment, for the saucy pirate captain - http://www.bbc.co.uk/doctorwho/classic/episodeguide/enlightenment/

Baker^2 - Vengeance on Varos, a darker Truman Show - http://www.bbc.co.uk/doctorwho/classic/episodeguide/vengeancevaros/detail.shtml

McCoy - Remembrance of the Daleks, no question. This one could have been written by Stephen Moffat. Ace kicks so much ass in it too. - http://www.bbc.co.uk/doctorwho/classic/episodeguide/remembrancedaleks/

I will never forget the indelible mark Ace left on my heart when she beat up a dalek with a baseball bat. :3

Your suggestion of The Three Doctors reminds me: I should throw The Five Doctors into the mix as a bonus!
