Really interesting article (via chonklatime on Tumblr) by an African author about what much of the "hip" western charity for Africa looks from his perspective. Makes a lot of sense to me. It's not anti-charity, but if I felt like my people were being treated like a sick puppy that needed to be saved, as opposed to being given tools and cooperation with which to help ourselves, I'd chafe a bit too.

This reminds me of an organization I've been meaning to look into more. I once emailed the info people at charitynavigator.org and asked them if they had any advice for finding and supporting local, natively-run organizations as opposed to orgs trying to help from the outside in. They pointed me to globalgiving.org, which helps connect local orgs in poorer parts of the world with donors in wealthier parts.
