Thanks to everyone who came to the ZOMGBBQ/ChalkPartay.
I wish I'd kept track of the number of people who showed up, food that was consumed, etc.
My rough estimates are something like:
- Attendees: LOTS
- Veg burgers cooked: LOTS
- % of cooked burgers consumed: 100
- Fruits and veggies grilled: ZOMGLOTS
- Smoke alarm incidents: 4
Poor
preraphaelite was chained to the grill for most of the event. Well, actually I take back the "poor" bit, as that was a trap of her own making, and we both still had fun.
We ended up not having to give in and go buy burgers, but instead just split the work between me (with help from the infinitely more competent Jason S) pan-frying preraph's homemade patties ("spicy black bean" and "tofu, miso and pumpkin seed") in the kitchen while she grilled veggies and basically anything else that wasn't too flammable that people put in front of her. Big thanks to everyone who brought food, too. We definitely did not lack!
Also, I finally got to play Cards Against Humanity. And lo, there was a new addition to Brad's Very Short List of Games He Will Almost Always be Willing to Play. I feel dirty, but dirty has become strangely comfortable. Pray for me.
On the opposite end of the innocence spectrum, I also got in some good games of foursquare, and realized that a foursquare court can double as a good/evil+lawful/chaotic alignment grid, so when people weren't playing foursquare on it, we filled in our favorite characters, in some cases plotting whole character arcs. This led to some interesting discussions. I'd never thought of Garack from DS9 and Javert from Les Miserables as both being examples of Lawful Neutral characters (for the record, preraph vigorously debates the latter assessment), but.. yeah. I can see that (though my DS9 is a bit rusty).
Anyway, I digress. If I were going to do one thing differently, I wish I'd come up with something a bit more creative than the standard D+D alignments. Since I drew the court I've had two better ideas:
One is just to use more interesting axes, like stoic/manic+content/longing (inward and outward manifestation of desires), or something like that.
The more ambitious, but so cool I might just try it at another party option is to assign a unique foursquare mechanic to each quadrant. Given the frequency with which people rotate between squares, this could be both very confusing and very fun. :)
Also, people made our driveway preeeeetty! :)
Viv A and her boy made a remarkably good artistic team!

There were a lot of babies present. A lot. Being the most readily available source of meat at the party, some did not survive.

(yes, we traced an actual baby)
In fairness, if we didn't get him, the dragon would have.

Or... whatever this is.

In other news, maybe I need to see this movie after all...

You're a kitty!

Aaaand, the afore-mentioned foursquare court.

Finally, "oh, but I don't remember how to play foursquare" was not an acceptable excuse at this party, as I anticipated this and looked up the official rules at the national foursquare league website, creating a helpful rules poster (which also conveniently shielded the most breakable nearby window).
