Some of y'all may remember the nifty-looking indie comic whose kickstarter I mentioned a while ago. I like the art style, and I know half of the creative team behind it, so I was glad to see when they met their kickstarter goal.

However, in the comics business, getting the thing made is only half of the battle. I'll let [livejournal.com profile] accousticshadow2 explain the rest, but the short version is, ESPECIALLY if you who are not in the New England area and have a relationship with your local comic shop, if this comic looks cool to you, go in and ask them for it!

All the buildup for Ian’s comic has finally brought it to the make or break point. Dr. Atlantis is in the May Previews for Diamond. (For non-comic book people, Diamond is the ONLY distributor of comic books in the United States and one of the major distributer of comic books in the world) If a store has comics they either bought them directly from the indie writer or more likely they bought them from Diamond. Diamond has a rule, however, that any comic (title) must sell a set number of books to stores or Diamond will drop the book. That means comic book stores across the world must order a total of 701 copies of Dr. Atlantis or Diamond will drop it and it well never be allowed back in Diamond again. It doesn’t seem like a big number, but comic stores tend to be very picky and they won’t order things that are indie or new because they worry that they won’t sell. Dr. Atlantis is more like a graphic novel than a traditional comic book. It is thicker, has the page content of a trade and sells for $10, so comic stores might see it as more of a gamble.

I would ask all of you that have had a real honest-to-god dream to one day have your art and creativity and passion really actually become something, to help out. If you are a frequent customer at a comic book store, talk to the buyer at the store. Ask him or her if they have seen the page ad for Dr. Atlantis in the May Previews (Previews is the catalog comic book stores order from). The comic is printed by Rare Earth Comics if they can’t find it (they are organized by company alphanumerically). Tell they you think it looks cool. If you have the money, ask him to preorder you a copy. Stores are more likely to order a second copy if 1 person is interested. (the theory is if one person is interested, then there is a stronger likelihood that more people will be interested) If you know people who are really into steam punk or historical fantasy high adventure, let them know about the book. If you live outside the United States, no worries! Diamond is an international company. Comic books stores where you live order from Diamond too!

The time has come... The kickstarter raised enough money for the printing costs and the ad, but all that will be for nothing if stores don’t order enough of the comic. We have been lobbying and comic door-to dooring and calling stores from the company. All Ian can do now is send a little prayer up. So call your local comic book store, and hope for the best.
