While packing up some stuff at BCOS I found a slip of paper tucked into a Perl book I probably haven't opened for ten years. It reads, in my handwriting:

"Idea: instead of destroying the world, she is offered the chance to die, but to do it she has to take everyone else with her"

No, I have no idea what it's about.

Hmm

My guess would be that it is a Second Shift reference. (Yes, I know Second Shift isn't 10 years old but I figure that if you can forget writing the note then you can forget opening the book more recently.)

That was one of my first thoughts too, and it does sound eerily like the arc of a certain character in 2S, but that character isn't female, and I can't imagine a scenario where I would have thought about suggesting something like that for any of the female characters, so... I don't think that's it?

Tangentially, is Todd in the Shadows any good? As far as I can tell, he's an annoying remora that's attached itself to Nostalgia Chick and won't let go.

specifically what book was it... and most importantly when you were opening that book (and assuming you were using this paper as a bookmark) what kinds of things were you doing in your life? ie.... what movies, books, plays, larps were you involved in if any?

It was a book on programming, and not game programming, so if it had something to do with that, then maybe I'm better off not knowing. ;)

If it was from as long ago as I think, it was well before I started LARPing, too!

Myyyyysteries!

It obviously sounds like a plot from something... were you writing at the time? stories? plays? attempted novels?

It sounds like someone who potentially wants to stop existing and is angry or unintentionally destroying the world. "god" "ghost" "demon" "super powerful sentient computer" who might not want to destroy the world but has enough pathos that destroying everyone else in order to end her own suffering is a structural dilemma.

Were you into folklore, religion etc at the time?

I think he's great. To be honest, I think Todd has actually begun to supplant nchick as my favorite reviewer on tgwtg (which is not to say that I don't still love nchick!). If you've only seen him in her reviews, though, then I can understand not getting what the appeal is. It's in his solo reviews where he really shines, IMO.

Here are a few I'd recommend. If these don't appeal to you then he's probably just not your thing.

His deconstruction of If I Die Young is a great example of the literary approach he takes to lyrics, which is one of my favorite things about him.

In a similar vein, it is a thing of wonder and amazement to me that he attempts (about halfway through) a Deep Analysis of Sexy and I Know It... and succeeds.

And finally, if you want some good old fashioned schadenfreude from watching a very angry and articulate person tearing Chris Brown a new one, look no further than his review of Deuces.

I look forward to hearing what you think!

ETA Oh, also worth noting: Whether you dig his stuff or not, his work really is independent of nchick's, as he's been making reviews (on youtube before he joined TGWTG) since 2009.

Yeah, I remember reading or hearing somewhere that they met at a GwtG video shoot. I'll watch his stuff (not right now, but I will) and see if he's more than That Guy who shows up in Every. Video. She. Does. Now. and bugs me to death.

More to come. Thanks.

In the mean-time, I will wholeheartedly agree that as sidekicks go I'll take Nella any day. :)

...though I did like him in the What Women Want review. "Sandwich. Sandwich. Sandwich. Ass... Sandwich."

I've always thought Perl was dangerous. Now I know how dangerous!
