Yesterday, [livejournal.com profile] preraphaelite and I moved (almost) all of the stuff from the Dav (her old place) to the new, as yet unnamed, one.

Well, when I say "we" moved all of the stuff, I mean we did so with the help of some of the cadre of handymen the new owner of the Dav keeps on retainer (seriously-- dude owns a lot of properties, it seems). He has a vested interest in helping us move so he can start his renovations sooner, so... yay, free movers. It took all day and two trips with a U-Haul, but we've now got most of the stuff moved.

...which of course means that the new place is now intimidatingly full of boxes, and we haven't even gotten the bulk of my stuff from bcos yet (that's next weekend's project). Yeeps. We'd hoped to make more progress on the unpacking today, but... well, suffice to say unpacking the xbox first was not the best plan. Making progress in Mass Effect, though! >_>

Re Mass Effect, it's good to see that so many people seem to be digging ME3, because we kind of need a reason to keep going with ME1. It's not that there's anything really bad about the game (except for the mind-bendingly stupid healing mechanic-- seriously, who thought having one heal, with a crazy-slow refresh rate, for the entire party was a good idea??), but we played Dragon Age first, and what with ME pre-dating DA, it's painfully clear some of the lessons that BioWare learned and improvements they made between the two. Most notably, after becoming used to the great intra-party banter in DA, every time our party in ME gets into an elevator and just stands there silently (which happens a lot. Friggin elevators...), or when we try to talk to a party member while out on a mission only to have them repeat the same line of dialog every time, we cry a little.

...but I digress.

Aaaanyway, the new place is gawgeous, and despite some unfun aspects of the moving process (like the fact that I've had a nasty headcold the whole. damn. time.) we've been really enjoying settling into it. At this rate it's going to take a while for the house to be ready for a party, but we can't wait to have y'all over for a housewarming once it is! :D

And now to go assemble the damn bedroom...

Welcome, neighbor!

If you need help unpacking, I'm right around the corner, and available most nights (not tomorrow, but Tues-Th this week).

We'll let you know if we do! For now, I think we're mostly just figuring out where to put everything...

Some of the elevator conversations in ME1 are pretty great. Especially Tali and Garrus, or anything involving Wrex.

It's worth it to make an effort to befriend your squad, though, because the friendships that carry over into ME2 are worth it. There's a lot more mission commentary in ME2, and the combat is (in my opinion) much improved. Also, you can have pets onboard the ship xD

I wish we had more reason to bring Wrex around. We're all biotics, though, so he's a bit redundant. Then again, we're currently doing the plant where you are ever so subtly advised to bring Liara along, and having two biotics has proven to be pretty badass. I only wish we'd brought Ashley instead of Tali since, much as I (think I) like Tali, we could really use a heavy. Lift! Throw! Shoot! :D

I haven't found any of the heavies to be more useful than my own pistol. :(

It is a little known fact that the Protheans died out due to dehydration from long elevator rides.

The pacing is better in the second game and each party member has their own storyline mission thing to do, something important to them. The characters feel more fleshed out as a result.

Garrus is still my favorite.

Glad to hear it! Garrus is another one I wish I had more use for stats-wise, but I really like his voice actor. Plus I really like the character design of his race, like an odd mix of reptilian and feline (at least, their noses look strangely felinoid to me).

I liked the elevator rides, personally. They made the Citadel and other such places feel more cohesive, rather than "I enter this magical door, pretty pictures flash, and then I'm somewhere else".

Hearing the news reports about my exploits also made me feel much more like my actions were affecting the world.

I also really miss the Mako & those planetary exploration missions.

And single biotic cooldown per character is bullshit.

And don't even get me started on this "thermal clip" malarkey.

Yeah, the single cooldown sucks. Cooldown per power encouraged you to use multiple powers, as opposed to spamming one power over and over.

I think I just ran out of things to listen to in the elevators.

The Mako did add an interesting feel to things. I just didn't have the time to explore the entirety of every planet I went to. It was better than the resource gathering in ME2.

Oh, hey, I am also playing ME1 for the first time. I'm really, really bad at it. I keep dying. :P The story is fun so far, though.

Have you tried turning the difficulty down? I found that on the lowest setting, you can pretty much hide behind a wall and let your two party members handle it, though there are a couple of mandatory boss fights that gave me a lot of trouble.

Yup. I've got it set to Casual. I'm really just that bad. XD

It's probably just that I don't really play shooters. First-person perspective makes me queasy and I've got a neurological disorder that makes my hand-eye coordination pretty iffy, so I've pretty much avoided the entire genre up until now. But people kept telling me how much I'd love the ME story, so I decided to give it a try. And, hey, they were totally right about the story. I'm sure I'll get better with more play.

This is really interesting and I'd love to compare notes, because I only did ME1 recently and I've never played any DA games (or really anything after ME1) and I think that what I've seen is one of the best games that has ever happened.

Absolutely, feel free to grab me the next time we're both at a party or whatever. Also, I'd be curious to hear what you think of Dragon Age: Origins if you get the chance to play it. It definitely still has its flaws, but I think I found it more engaging overall (so far, at least).

Assuming “The Dav” was short for “The Davenport”, I suggest you name the new place “The Settee” or “The Ottoman” or “The Love Seat”.

Also, congratulations on getting so much moved!

Yay new house! I'd totally be down for a housewarming party at some point, but can understand not being able to do one right away. So go ahead and settle and unpack and such and let us know when you're ready for partying. :)

Out of curiosity, whereabouts is the new place at?

Near Ball Square, so not too far from y'all. :)
