A friend of mine is trying to raise money on Kickstarter to start publishing an indie comic. It's a steampunk seafaring adventure that, from what I've seen, the kind of over-the-top badassery I tend to enjoy in that sort of story, and a retro art style I really dig. They're going for $1500, which seems like a lot, but then I know bugger all about publishing comics, and the beauty of Kickstarter is that one loses nothing by pledging if they don't get there. So I've made a pledge and am now spreading the word. Take a look at the video and if you like what you see, give their kickstarter page a visit.

(hmm... lj doesn't seem to like the video. Well, it's right there on the ks page, so have at)

The reason for 1500 is that at New York Comicon Diamond came up to our little indie comic book company and said that if we submitted Dr. Atlantis it would be VERY well received. The problem is that if it gets sent through Diamond it has to be printed on a LARGE scale, much larger than we have ever printed anything before. If this Diamond push is successful then Dr. Atlantis will no longer be a little New England comic book, but a National comic book. This will also generate national interest in the Webcomics on the RareEarth site as well as the already established Shadow Tracers comic. This is a do or die trying effort! Ian is both super excited and terrified at the same time.

Having watched a couple other webcomics creators raise money for publishing, $1500 is about right. Especially when you consider the writer and artist are working for free and you're basically just pledging up-front to buy the finished product anyway.
