Happy First Snow, everyone!
Dec. 11th, 2010 12:40 amAfter a day that was less-than-good on multiple levels, I got off the plane from Chicago (or rather, Lombard, IL-- a city that seems to be literally nothing but hotels and mini-malls for about five square miles) and onto an MBTA system where there had been some sort of accident, such that it took me as long to get from the airport to my home as it had taken me to get from IL to MA.
And yet, things feel ok, because as I was riding home on the bus, the first snow of the year began to fall on Boston. Spending a week in IL, where it was already snowing, made me realize how important being there for (or at least waking up to) First Snow has become to me. Just earlier today I'd said to a friend on IM that I hoped I hadn't missed it. First Snow brings with it that remarkable sense of awareness that one is part of a natural system much larger than one's self, the kind of awareness solstices and equinoxes are supposed to bring, but it's so much more immediate, less abstract than that. After I got off the bus, I just watched the flakes glide and swirl in the streetlight for a while, and let myself believe for a bit that it was not by coincidence they had waited to welcome me home.
Mind you, I'll be sick of it in short order once I'm knee-deep in the stuff, but until then, happy First Snow everyone (including those who got those weeks ago or don't expect to see any at all-- the nice thing about First Snow is it happens so many times a year!).
In completely unrelated news, on the plane trip over I watched a childrens movie about monkeys in space. Having zero expectations and no entertainment needs other than being distracted for a while probably helped, but it seems I liked it more than most. In any case, I share with you now a clip from that movie, quite possibly the best short motivational speech about astronauts vis a vis rock stars ever:
Also, I <3 Patrick Warburton.
That is all.
