About 12 years ago, I picked up a double-LP copy of the soundtrack to Jesus Christ Superstar for $1 at a library sale and fell in love with it. In my lifetime I've been both very religious and very not-religious, and this show has appealed throughout, because to me it focuses on the most universally-accessible themes of the passion play: the duality of human nature, the struggle to understand one's place within a larger context, whether, upon finding what one sees as a role or a calling, to accept it as a duty or rail against it; basically, how one deals with being out of control, of one's destiny, movement, or people. That original recording (starring the singer from Deep Purple as Jesus and Anthony Stewart Head's brother Murray aka Freddie on the Black Album of Chess aka ok I will stop broadway geeking now as Judas) will never be topped, IMO, but suffice it to say I've wanted to be in a production of it ever since.
As you've probably already heard if you read this journal, that desire has come to fruition, and I will be playing Pilate in the MIT Musical Theater Guild's production which will be running the first three weekends of September. We're having our first rehearsal with the full orchestra tonight, and I am very excited.
If you're in the area and want to come see it, tickets can now be reserved here
Hope to see you there!
