Nov. 7th, 2004 12:21 amOk, Here it is, real simple: Go see the Incredibles.
Seriously. I think
trollprincess put it best when she said of the film: "OMGWTFLOVELOVELOVE".
Elements of the movie feel like if Ben Edlund had written The Watchmen as a family comedy (yeah, roll that one around in your brain for a bit), but at the same time it has a really original feel to it (not that Ben Edlund writing The Watchmen wouldn't have been original..). But no, come to think of it, "original" still isn't the right way to describe it. The whole "super heroes in real life" thing has been done, of course, and all the heroes in the movie have standard archetypal powers, but the writing and characterization is so good that they don't feel like copies and at times the powers are used in ways I'd actually never thought of before. At other times they're just beautifully realized. For example, when I saw Frozone, who is basically Iceman, do Iceman's icebridge-locomotion thing, it actually, unlike anytime I've seen the trick drawn or animated before, made physical _sense_ and I could believe that, if one could generate ice from thin air, one could actually travel the way he did.
Basically, The Incredibles is now far-and-away my favorite Pixar movie. And while I would hate to give anyone unrealistic expectations by hyping it too much I can at least assure you that you will have a good time. Trust me on this. It will bring a ray of light into your week. Oh, and it has the Episode III teaser attached to it which left me, against all odds, cautiously optimistic for a dark, Empire-Strikes-Back-esque Star Wars movie where lots of bad things happen to people. Woo.

*contemplates*
Nope, still not believing. I'm picturing a *fluffy* Ozymandias and a Bogart-y Rorschach. And that's just weird, yo.
Guess I'll have to see Incredibles, then.

Oh, goody! I hope you're right: there needs to be death and dismemberment to make up for that Uncle Tom CGI thing and the pod race. Ugh.

Well, put it this way: Elements of the premise (including a rant about the impracticality of capes) reminded me of Watchmen and elements of the humor (much mockery of fanboys, a french mad-bomber supervillain named "Bom'b Voyage") reminded me of Edlund.

Yes. Yes you will.

Date: 2004-11-08 09:52 am (UTC)It sucks to watch The Incredibles and know that it's already 10 times the movie that the Fantastic Four will be.
Well, that seals it
