A friend of mine is contemplating taking a job in Eureka and asks "what is there to do in Eureka".

Umm... I have no idea. I'm sure I've been there once, but I've no idea why.

Does anyone know anything specific about Eureka, and whether it would suck to live there for a social person?

Isn't the main pastime in Eureka jumping out of baths & running naked through the town shouting "I have found it"?

If so, it sounds like a pretty exciting place to live.

Depends on one's interests. There are plenty of outdoor activities (hiking, boating, redwoods, etc.), several microbreweries, and several annual festivals and events.

Humboldt County is, however, fairly self-contained. They're far from other major metropolitan areas, so if they don't have the sort of social events in which your friend is interested, it may be difficult to find them elsewhere.

I have heard from a good friend who grew up in Humboldt that it is not somewhere that our kinds of people really want to be in... apparently it's very insular, a bit conservative (which is surprising given their reputation for weed, but he told me that basically weed is Humboldt's beer).

Not awful, but not vibrant and life-affirming the way Cambridge/Boston and the Bay Area are.

There's a lot of small-town in Humbolt county, it's true. But there's also a lot of what makes smaller communities vibrant- deep social connections, community institutions that serve the greatest needs of their neighbors, along with a university that's large enough to exert significant influence.

One out best friends is the registrar at CSU Humbolt and has a great time raising her tow girls in McKinleyville. They just bought goats!

You should also reach out to Tiv. Brandy grew up in McKinleyville and her folks still live there. Both of them probably has a very different perspectives than what we bring as "occasional visitors."

It's pretty quiet, but I could see being reasonably happy there. They have a monthly art walk that's very popular (or at least did a couple years ago.) Cute touristy stores and B&Bs. Gorgeous sunsets. I have a musician friend in Arcata nearby who probably knows what to do up there better.

Also, lots of meth. Once when I was there there was a suspect holed up with a gun in the Super 8 Motel. But lots of towns have crime.

I have nothing to contribute other than I, secretly (or not-so-secretly since I'm posting this here), will be imagining this person's job offer coming from this Eureka (http://www.syfy.com/eureka/) as opposed to the real one.

Ah, the extent of my dorkdom, it knows no bounds.

does your friend like smoking weed? then eureka is where he needs to be. if he does not like smoking weed, then he should probably skip this gig. eureka is all about weed.
