Today was a pretty good day.

We moved in to our new apartment. Most of you have seen the arial photos, but I'll post something more up-close-and-personal soon. I'll make sure to include some choice photos of our FREAKIN HUGE BEANBAG. We picked it up on our way out of Florida (literally arranged to have the movers pick it up at the beanbag store). It is 7 feet in diameter when laid "flat", which still gives it a good 1.5ish feet in height and is a color called, I kid you not, "norwegian blue". I am so in love with it. We had lots of help moving in from friends (thanks again [livejournal.com profile] aerynvale, [livejournal.com profile] ileah and [livejournal.com profile] csharpmajor) and family so it went pretty quicky despite us having to pause a couple of times for rain. I'm really excited about moving in to this place, but unfortunately we had to return the rental truck in Jamul and were so tired by the end of the day that we're crashing here tonight.

The other big thing that happened is that I got to hear Henry Rollis speak. I first saw Rollins when I was in the 8th grade. He was being interviewed on 120 minutes, after which they played the video for "Low Self Opinion", which had jumping up and down and rolling on the floor with teenangsty delight. Looking (or listening as the case may be) back, his lyrics seem a lot... cornier, I guess, now. But man, at the time his songs hit me in a way like nothing else I'd ever heard before. In my freshman year of highschool a friend let me borrow one of his spoken word albums. I still remember sitting in the back of biology class, my walkman oh-so cleverly hidden in my punker jacket trying (and failing) not to give myself away with guffaws of laughter at the stories he would tell.

And yet, I had mixed feelings about seeing him live. Most of the stuff we have by him is 100% gold, but then I have at least one CD in particular where I guess he was having a bad day because (IMHO, of course) he just sort of comes accross as sort of a jerk (unfortunately that's the one I had to go and lend to [livejournal.com profile] mlechan without thinking. I'm still kicking myself for that one).

Anyway, the short version before I go to bed: It was fantastic. He was hilarious, but he wasn't just some quipping comedian. He has a gift for telling stories that are wildly entertaining while still having a purpose to them besides just making the audience laugh. And it really made me realize just how much of an influence this guy has been on me. People comment about me being "laid back" or "level headed" or whatever and a lot of it is (ironically if you've only heard his music) stuff that I picked up during my formative years from Rollins.

So yeah. It was good. So all in all it was a very good day. Oh, and I'm so in love with 94.9, the local radio station. In the couple of days I've been listening to them I've heard Bad Religion, the Dead Kennedies, Nirvana, Alice in Chains, The New York Dolls, The Ramones, Floging Molly, Iggy Pop and a bunch of new bands that I'm wanting to hear more of. It's like it's part hip alternarock and part "Brad's Childhood -- The Radio Station!". They're streaming at www.fm949sandiego.com (windows only, grumblegrumble) if you want to take a listen.

Drat. It's 2:30am and I have to go to bed. Sorry for slacking so much on the LJ everyone, but especially for the last couple of weeks I've basically been working two full time jobs between my Red Hat stuff (I'm writing courseware for our highschool/JC curriculum. Woo!) and my latest software project, which has officially become my first project to actually make it to the point where I show it to the world at large and not just a small group of friends. I don't think any of you use Fedora Linux, but just in case, it's at www.fedoratracker.org and it was a heckuva lot harder to write than it looks. =;) I'll write more about it later as I'm really quite proud of it and the Fedora community is receiving it well. In fact I've already found my name mentioned on Fedora sites in about 6 different languages. Go me. =:)

And with that, g'nite.

Cool!

I'm still looking for feedback if you have suggestions for ways to improve it and/or are interested in contributing code.

Huzzah for new digs! Huzzah for free-roaming software!

HUZZAH FOR 7-FOOT BEANBAGS!!!

And if Rollins' other spoken word is less asshole-y than that one, then I am sure to like those even MORE,but I fell in love with the one you lent me, so worry not. (And certainly auto-punt no more! Self-kicking is never productive, except for bruises.) Can't wait to get back to the states and come visit. I'll just sleep on Deep Blue. *laugh*

Well, to clarify: Disk 1 of the set we lent you is the my least favorite and the one to which I was referring. Disk 2, however, is my absolute tippy-top favorite (that's the one with all the tour stories).

Oh and Deep Blue? Best. Beanbag. Name. Ever. =:)

I don't remember which were disk 1 or 2, just that some of them were more bitter and full of assholery than others. But on the whole, there isn't a track on those two that I didn't like at least a little bit. Mark and I were laughing so hard, tears were rolling down our cheeks. It was great. It was one of those fun afternoons where we just laid on the bed and listened to it on the stereo, and he would say these things that we both totally understood not only in general but also pertaining to us in particular, and we would give each other these huge "Aren't we fucked up just like Henry?" bear hugs. It was awesome.

And I'm glad you liked the Deep Blue thing, I thought it was pretty cool. *grin*
