Saw Moon, and lo it was good. I'm pretty sure it's still playing at the Somerville and it's well worth it. It's not the kind of movie I'm likely to watch over and over, but I want them to get more money so that it's worthwhile to keep making movies like this. I think Ferret's review put it well:

"""
There has been a dearth of actual science fiction movies lately. This is not to say that we don't have a lot of science fiction trappings - sure, we get giant robots in Transformers and fightin' star ships in Star Trek, but those are action movies with a little sciffy sprinkled in for flavor.

What we need is a movie that takes a central idea about how technology might affect people in the future, then runs with it all the way, ticking off the changes until we reach our inevitable conclusion.
"""

This movie does not patronize you or try to explain every little thing that happens (which made comparing notes afterward a lot of fun). Just the sensation of being trusted by a movie that didn't feel the need to give me spoon-fed exposition punctuated by 'splosions was worth the price of admission.

I think Moon was the best movie I've seen so far this year, it really had everything that I like about sci-fi movies, and for that matter, many of the things that I like about movies in general. Also, the fact that it was directed by David Bowie's son makes me very happy.

Huh. I did not know that (about the director). I hope he makes more!

Sounds like Moon was a win over District 9.

That reminds me, are people going to Plan 9? Is there info somewhere?

D'oh. Sorry, I completely flaked when you emailed me about this.

Tix here. We're seeing it on 8/20 at the Fenway 13.
