geekdome.net is expiring in July. Register.com is $35 for 1yr, or $50 for 2. I hear there are cheaper registrars, but with all the godaddy shenaningans and whatnot in the last few years, I figure I should go with something someone I know has experience with and can vouch for.

Suggestions?

I have an enom reseller account that I can make subaccounts on. When i set the prices to minimum its like 10.25 (ask Nat, he should know for sure). Enom is good - i've used them for about 10 years now.

Yep. I think it's actually like $10.50, but that's hair splitting. I've been 100% happy with eNom.

Do they just register or will they host do the nameserving as well? register.com has a nice interface where I can control all the dns records remotely, which is nice. That said, we has a static IP so I could just host it myself.

I take it you host on your own system somewhere? I've got my primary domains registered through Dreamhost, as they're also my hosting provider. For $6 a month it's hard to go wrong. Are you doing your own DNS as well? (Which requires static addressing...)

They'll do all the hosting.

If you need separate registering and DNS management, you can register with anyone and then you can use the services offered by the folks who run dyndns.org for assigning names to numbers. That's what I did when I was running off my own systems, before I started using a hosting provider.

I switched to hosted when I started running important things and I no longer wanted to be responsible for keeping everything safe. I was far too likely to do something stupid to one of my own systems and break things (often because I was serving from my desktop workstation).
