Ok, California, you now officially have no excuse. You don't want to be less progressive than Iowa, do you?

"“Equal protection under the Iowa Constitution is essentially a direction that all persons similarly situated should be treated alike. Since territorial times, Iowa has given meaning to this constitutional provision, striking blows to slavery and segregation, and recognizing women’s rights. The court found the issue of same-sex marriage comes to it with the same importance as the landmark cases of the past.”

Happy birthday to me. =:)

Also, may I just take a moment to mock the rebuttal the article cites:

“The decision made by the Iowa Supreme Court today to allow gay marriage in Iowa is disappointing on many levels," State Senator Paul McKinley, the Republican leader, said in a statement on The Des Moines Register’s Web site. "I believe marriage should only be between one man and one woman and I am confident the majority of Iowans want traditional marriage to be legally recognized in this state."

"But... but, we don' wanna have to treat them the same!". Awww, sad face for the him (ignoring the fact that traditional marriage is still recognized in the state. moron.)

Yeah way to phrase it really freaking divisively -- "the majority want traditional marriage to be legally recognized"? Like, Teh Ghey is out to steal all of the marriage for ourselves, and not share with all you icky hets out there? Oh and by the way, while we're at it, we lecherous sodomites are keeping all of the music, design, art, fashion, literature, and snark that we've come up with too. Y'all can't have any of that anymore either.

But It Doesn't Matter, 'cause he now gets to BE UPSET ABOUT EQUAL RIGHTS!! (C'mon California. Get the memo. It's time. C'mon.)

I feel the need to point out that this post isn't flocked, introducing the possibility of it coming up in someone's web search. Thus, you may wish to edit bits of your comment.

Well said. I love it when people sum things up like that. I can never hold it all in my head long enough to try to explain it to people, so even though I know most of this stuff, it's nice to read things like your post now and then.

My cousin and her husband live in Iowa. They're going to a rally. Good on them.

One of my characters tomorrow is a clown that suffers from terrible depression. Seemed appropriate.

Yaaaaaay Iowa!

And since Iowa doesn't have a boneheaded constitutional amendment process, it will be a couple years before it gets overturned.

(I did have to check the date when I first heard about it, though. :-)

Yaaaaaay Iowa!
