I posted a while ago, by way of
oakenguy, about a creative way of dealing with Fred Phelps and his fellow Westboro Babtist Church idiots: pledging money to whatever group they're protesting for every minute they spend there (Edit: it turns out that all of the phelps-a-thons are run by one guy, who is soliciting donations to help fund a road trip he wants to go on to "gain an understanding of the current political climates, and explore ways of combating discrimination" while making a documentary of the process-- Hrmm... Edit, part deux
captainecchi points out that I cannot read. While the guy is happy to solicit donations for his road trip elsewhere, the site does at least imply that the phelps-a-thon will be raising money for the school). Well,
londo just pointed out that they will be coming to Cambridge on March 13th to protest at a high school because... it has a Gay/Straight Alliance. Umm.. doesn't pretty much every high school have one of those nowadays? Anyway, the quote from Phelps about it on the Phelps-a-thon website is pretty wingnut-tastic.
If you've got some cash to spend, I strongly encourage you to make a pledge. Afterward, Phelps and co will be sent a nice thank you card telling them how much they helped to raise. Who knows, if this sort of thing starts being consistently successful, they might actually shut up and go home. proceeds go to Driving Equality, which, from what I've read about on his website, I'm actually not crazy about cause-wise, but to me it seems worth it to discourage phelps and co.
If you don't have cash to spend, please post a link to the phelps-a-thon website, as I would dearly like to see this thing catch on.
