A friend of mine wants to visit around October and go driving in "leaf season", when the leaves do their color-changing thing. Does anyone know exactly when the best time for this is? Is late October about right?

It depends on the temperature and wetness of the year, but mid-late October's the core of it.

The season varies year to year. Autumn foliage season varies based on a lot of things. And it starts earliest in Canada, moves down through Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, through Mass, New York, etc.

A google search on New England Foliage should get a lot of hits.

This is a map from last year's season.

And Weather.com's map has 'usual' seasons.

Mid-late October is good. We tried to get foliage on our wedding (Oct 7) but it was too early, so shoot for sometime between the 15th and Halloween.

Also, some areas might be completely colorful and others still green, so be sure to drive around the country a lot. :-)

does depend on where, and the wetness of the summer/fall and when the first frost falls varies it. i've seen peaks as early as first week in oct., but that is only in the wettest years.
new york state tourism site has a whole leaf watcher piece, too.
