Jul. 16th, 2003 01:03 pmHi. I'm in New York. Thought you'd all like to know.
I've actually been here for a couple of days but I've been to busy to post, much less actually see the place. What I have seen has surprised me, though. I usually don't like big cities. Can't stand them. But I have to admit that NYC (or at least lower manhattan, which is all I've seen) has a certain... something to it that I like. I usually claustrophobic in cities. In New York, maybe because it is _so_ big the feeling is more like 'comfortably anonymous'.
One factor of this, I have to admit, is that I haven't run into any panhandlers. It's not snobbery, but panhandlers are one of the biggest factors in my disliking big cities because it takes such an emotional toll on me to be constantly confronted with misery, self-inflicted or otherwise that I can't do anything about but feel awful for ignoring. The fact that I've heard mixed reports about the ethics of whatever policies caused the lack of beggars in the first place makes me feel even less secure in my comfort here.
That aside, class is going well. I do enjoy the fact that my walk from the hotel to work takes me past the stock exchange, trump towers and a few other notables and, well, just this general feel I get on the streets. Maybe its the air of total self-sufficiency that the city has.
Ok. I am actually writing this as my students finish a lab so I must be going. Sorry to have been so out of touch. Wish I could say It'll be better in the future but really I have no idea.
Oh, and my new userimage is a detail from a portrait that my vavorite comics artist, David Mack did of Elizabeth and I for our first aniversary. Took him all of 3 minutes. That man is amazing. I'd been wanting to use it for lj for a while but it was Lizbeth who finally took a photo of it with our digicam and then gimpified the background a bit so thanks to her!
Ok Igonow. For real.
