Holy wow, tonight was really good. Started out going to a goth-pop show at an art gallery. The nearest subway station was a mile north of the place and I live a mile south of it, so it was actually faster to walk. Walking a mile to get anywhere would have been unthinkable to me not that long ago, but I love my iriver. Tasks that used to be tedious and frustrating are so much nicer when I have music to listen to along the way. Plus the exercise felt great.

The show it's self was... nice. Nice, but not what I was looking for that night. It was an all sit-down show and I'd wanted to dance. Caught the last two bands anyway. The first one was fronted by a woman with a fantastic voice, but the mixing wasn't quite right and I couldn't make out what she was saying. The second group consisted of three guys and three laptops, a good sign. One laptop served as a beatbox and they seemed to be using the other two in lieu of effects pedals for their guitars. If so, that is officially super-cool. They were talented musicians and their singer also had a really nice voice, but this time the mixing was done right and, for me at least, this detracted somewhat from their appeal. To each his/her own and all, but there was a little too much of the Purple Lakes of Desolation thing going on for my tastes.

So I began walking home and passed a bar where there'd been a bunch of people on my way over, but no music going on. This time there was music. Rock music. Loud music. Music that begged for me to leap around the room to it. And so I did. =:)

It was late in the show so they were letting people in for free (well, there was nobody at the door, at least). The music I'd heard turned out to be from a group called Read Yellow. What a stroke of luck. They were... fantastic. I've commented before about how I tend to listen to music empathetically. If there's enough energy there I don't need to know what they're saying. They don't even need to be good. I can just feed off of the energy and be loving it in my own little world. The singer of this band. Wow. He leapt, he screamed, he thrashed around on the floor. He performed like he was going to die tomorrow and it brought a little bit of me to life. Plus they actually were very talented musically. =;)

They were exactly what I needed.

I talked to the singer and the guitarist after the show. The singer gave me a copy of their CD and the guitarist and I talked about the local music scene. He's going to email me a list of similar bands to check out in the area. Right on. The singer had even heard of one of my favorite folk singers, Liz Nickrenz, who I asked about when I remembered that she's from Boston. Her goth band (yes, she's now in a goth band) still plays around the area apparnetly. Neat.

Anyway, tonight really drove home something I've discovered and forgotten about myslef over and over again. I like people. I mean, I really like people. They energize me. Dancing like a fool and then hanging out with strangers, swapping obscure band recommendations, has left me in a really positive mood that I only get when I go out like this. Doing so more consistently will be a major part of my reconstruction.

Then, to top everything off, I walked by a local cafe on the way home where a woman was baking (this was at 1:45am, mind you) with the bakery door open. Mmmm... cinnamon rolls. I startled her when I leaned in the kitchen to congratulate her on providing the best smell I'd experienced all night. =:)

One of my housemates mentioned a gaming event tomorrow night. The adventure continues. Woot.

That's fabulous and I am jealous.
Not to repeat what I've been saying in my own journal, but if you ever get a chance to check out Flipsyde live, do so without fail. Their album is good, but the lack of a drummer is a real problem; I love the album because I remember how they were performed, not always because of what I'm actually hearing. Their energy and attitude are a huge part of why they're one of my most favoritest bands now, and if that's what you like, you should keep your eyes open for them.
