May. 29th, 2004 12:59 pmOk, so for the last two weeks I've been working from home doing courseware. Up until a couple of days ago I was getting really frustrated that my progress lately has been so slow, but then I realized something: Unlike previous weeks I've been writing courseware for graphical applications instead of text stuff and the lesson I'm learning is that writing concise, text-based introductions to graphical applications is really friggin hard. I'd so much rather be writing about setting up RAID or something. But here I am trying to explain how to use office applications (OpenOffice.org, in this case). I got through the spreadsheet, word processor and presentation software ok, but it's really difficult to keep it concise without writing a book. I mean, if I'm going to cover feature A, why not feature B or feature C?
This is really difficult with OO.o's drawing program, which has a bunch of tools that have about equal chances of being useful depending on what you're doing with it. And each icon on the drawing iconbar expands to a bunch of other tools! The fact that I suck at making anything presentable in this application really doesn't help either. =:\
My attempts to concisely explain the expansion of the tools icons and their application in the creation of a document led me to make the image below. I thought I'd finally gotten something workable and of course it was preceeded by explanatory text, but when Lizbeth saw it she couldn't stop laughing and insisted that I display it to the world.

...that's intuitive, right?
...right?
*weep*

surely you, if anyone, will have seen Wargames and will appreciate 80s tech movie humor like this...

But shhh. This is just between you, me and Osama, ok?
