(( TL;DR: The band in the video below is worthy of support, and playing at the Cantab in Central Square this Thursday, 4/4. Come! ))
So I'm at Dragon*Con, and I'm just sort of hanging out chatting with a friend, when I notice this slightly creepy Rasputin-looking dude off in a corner. I go back to chatting, and then a few minutes later I hear music, coming from him, now armed with an upright bass, and a woman playing a kickdrum with her foot and a tricked out washboard with her hands while singing with a gorgeous, jazzy voice. And I was very impressed with what I heard.
This was my introduction to Megan Jean and the Klay Family Band, with whom I spent a fair amount of time at the con putting together material for another possible audio piece. They're both formally trained, very talented musicians with great stage presence, and a unique style they describe as "like a metal band if it was 1927". They're also two of the most dedicated musicians I know, literally living out of their car for years at a time going from gig to gig (to gig to gig to gig). Moreover, they're both good folks, and now I feel bad for initially mentally tagging Byrne Klay as "creepy Rasputin-looking guy", because he's actually one of the chillest people you're likely to meet, a complement to the powerhouse of personality that is Megan Jean, who convinced me to hire her for an impromptu voice lesson mid-con (entirely worthwhile, for the record).
So ok, here's the thing: they're touring the northeast, with a stop THIS THURSDAY, 4/4 at the Cantab Lounge in Central Square (if you're in the non-Boston northeast, here's the complete tour (http://www.meganjean.net/tour.html, but the Cantab seems to have been doing bugger all to advertise, as they're not listed on the club's event calendar, which just links to some subsidiary concert series whose site hasn't been updated since February.
SO, if this looks like your thing, or you just want to come support a couple of talented and dedicated musicians, come to the Cantab on 4/4! If you know someone who might be into it, please spread the word!
