I'm going to be in the SF area with preraphaelite from 12/3 to 12/12. Anything happening what I should know about? Interested in making something happen?
I just practiced on my drumkit until the bass pedal broke*.
It feels great.
In other news, I now have a drum kit**.
In other other news, the reason I have a drum kit is that a favorite band of mine from the UK, The Indelicates, are finally coming to the U.S., and in an unusual fashion. They're doing this tour (sadly only of the eastern half of the country) way on the cheap, to the extent that it's just the core duo, and the pianist isn't even shipping her keyboard. The plan is to borrow or rent instruments in every stop along the way, and recruit locals to play in their backup band. Sooooo... when they play in Cambridge on 10/16, I'll be playing drums with them, at least for a few songs. Yay! :D
They're also looking for other musicians of pretty much any instrument, provided you can learn some songs quicklike and keep up. If you're interested in taking part, send an email to info indelicates com!
In addition, they're looking for someone from whom to borrow a decent keyboard for the night. Failing that, if anyone knows a reliable place from which to rent, that would be better than nothing. According to the band's most recent blog post, "Anything with a weighted hammer action will do".
So yeah, that's what I've spent my evening doing, and it feels pretty great. I've missed playing kit a lot, and I've missed playing in a rock band even more. I'm nervous about diving back in like this, but was pleasantly surprised by how much of it came right back to me once I started practicing.
I hope to see y'all at the show if you're local***!
In the mean-time, here's the song that's been stuck in my head for the last few days:
* = an easy fix, fortunately.
** = complete with a pleasingly effective set of mutes that let me practice without shaking the house down. Yay!
*** = I feel I should mention to folks who aren't familiar with The Indelicates that they can veer toward the dark and disturbing (or sometimes just cynical), lyrically. Their third and latest album, songs from which will be on the set list, is a good example of this. It's a concept album called David Koresh Superstar, a rock opera about the Waco siege. Maybe un-necessarily, I feel I should mention this for anyone who would benefit from at least having a heads-up on that front. Personally, one of my favorite things about the band is their ability to craft beautiful songs from dark subjects, but YMMV.
