For the first time in months, I had an almost completely unstructured couple of days to myself this weekend... and I spent most of that editing audio for the finale of Second Shift... and having released a rough draft of the ep for cast/crew comment yesterday, it was totally worth it.

It is kind of surreal to be this close to finishing the project, but the biggest motivator for me has been knowing that there are people out there who still listen and care about the show. In fact, a couple are even liveblogging commentary on each episode as they re-listen to the whole series in preparation for the finale.

Here are the two I know about:

The latter has already provided two of the best-articulated, minimally-spoilery summaries/introductions to what I personally love about the series that I've seen (I don't feel too bad bragging about this, because it's mostly to do with the writing, in which I've had only a very small hand):

"Second Shift is a long-form fantasy audiodrama that follows the story of 3 college kids who get sucked into a magical world…and if you think that sounds cliché, well, good call, but believe you me, it’s worth it. This is a show that loves to stand tropes on their head, turn them inside out, and make them do a little dance. The characters are three dimensional, the dialog is natural and fun, and the morality is grey, so essentially this is my favorite thing in the universe...

I love love LOVE that the show takes three people, drops them in a fantasy world filled with zombies and evil Legionaires and magic…and then they work in a restaurant. I adore the fantastical mixed with the mundane…and honestly, isn’t this the most realistic option? And on that same token, by doing this we get to build up the characters and the world so much that by the time the inevitable Epicness hits, we CARE. OH how we care. And that’s awesome."

There's still a lot to be done on the finale, but I'm now confident that it *will* happen. So, while I've been holding off on encouraging people to listen for a while now, because I felt bad getting people into a series with months between new episodes, now I feel pretty confident saying that if you've got a commute, housework or anything else conducive to listening to audio theater, consider giving Second Shift a listen. Be warned that the first couple of eps are, IMO, a bit rough because we were all still finding our footing. If you get to the end of the second ep and don't want to hear the third, then it's probably not for you.
