So, I just happened upon this this morning: Kotodama. It's a video game, written in python, that uses speech recognition to teach Japanese. The premise is that "words are magic". You obtain words by wandering around the world, clicking on objects and asking (verbally) "what is this?". Then, having collected the appropriate words, you can for example levitate a boulder by pointing at it and saying "the rock rises"!

Haven't played it yet, but voice recognition? Japanese? Video games? Python? I Think that covers at least one major interest of about 90% of the people on my friends list. Enjoy!

EDIT: Aww, bugger. It's not actually done yet. I went to the downloads page and all they have is a concept video. =:(

EDIT, part deux: From the FAQ

Can I/my class/my child try out Kotodama?
Many people have enthusiastically asked if they can have a copy of Kotodama to try out themselves or use in their classroom. We want to be clear that Kotodama is currently only in a prototype state. Unfortunately for various support reasons we can not offer this prototype for public download. We are currently seeking possible avenues to continue development on Kotodama. Ideally, we would like to bring Kotodama to you in the form of a console video game but (if it happens) this probably won't be for a couple of years.

*sigh*. Such a neat idea. And the graphics/gameplay in the video look surprisingly good. And it's all done in my beloved python. =:)
