Had a very fun time at the King Richard's Faire. Hadn't thought of the people who run the place as carnies, but they kind of are in a fun, quasi-larpy way. =:) The guy I bought my ashiko drum from runs a store there and I hung around for about 1.5 hours playing the drums, attracting attention, and even inviting people into the shop and answering questions before meeting up with hazliya, her dad and her cousin to wander the grounds for the rest of the day, shopping, chatting, and cheering on the bad-guy knight in the joust (if I'd known they actually asked for ladies to put favors on the ends of their lances, I SO would have brought a pair of frilly panties-- an opportunity for comedy gold, lost!).

Anyway, a good time was had by all, and then I played with Drum Guy again (along with whoever else wanted to) at the closing ceremony. Apparently he sells drums, ceramic horns and faerie wings at fairs and festivals all over the place fairly regularly, and the next weekend I'm free for one, it seems I've landed a job. Seriously! I'm considering trading work for drum-making lessons.

I should probably head home and to bed, but I've been invited to an open-mic type thing Drum Guy does with some of the other festival folks in town. I'm starting to crash a bit emotionally, which happened as soon as I left people, so I think I'm going to go for one last fix before giving up for the night.

All in all, fun people, fun stuff, fun times (tymes?).

That reminds me- out in Rockport there's a really awesome Indian/Tibetan-type store with lots of really cool instruments. A lot of drums (of course) and also some pretty sweet stringed instruments (sitars, this nifty thing where it's essentially a keyed string instrument). You might get a kick out of some of their stuff. Place is called Floating Lotus.

I highly recommend working a faire at least once in your life. It's a great experience, and you get to know the people involved, who are always interesting. :)

What, King Richard's Fair? I didn't see anything like that there, but they did seem to be more lax with anachronisms than than the SCA.

Given how much fun I had just pretending to work there and then hanging out with people afterwards, I don't doubt it! I've got a couple ins now with drum-related things I can take part in in the future, and I really hope to do that.
