I've been meaning to put together an emergency preparedness kit for some time. The best thing I found in my first round of research on pre-made options with all-vegetarian food was a giant bucket of supplies and dry mixes from a company in Utah that makes vitamin supplements. Seriously. I even went so far as to purchase their sample pack of dishes like "A La King" and "Cacciatore" (because there's no Chicken, y'see).

I haven't gotten to try one yet, and I really hope I have better luck than [livejournal.com profile] theferret did. As it turns out, he just bought the three-times-the-food-and-none-of-the-supplies Bukkit-O-Doom product from the same company, and has reviewed it in his own... inimitable style.

The funniest photo-essay about survival-kit soup mix you will probably ever read.

Why is everyone suddenly looking at emergency preparedness kits?

From the way I've heard some people talk it's a combination of the hurricane season and, more recently, maybe the economic doomsaying that Ferrett pokes fun at in his review. Personally, it's been on my TODO list for years, just as a reasonable thing to have on hand in case of a natural disaster or whatever.

When we were staying in NY this summer, I had to empty the dehumidifier in the basement(with a 2 gallon tank) twice every night. At one such moment, god awful early in the morning, I had the brilliant thought - - "Oh my god! This is better than the back of the toilet tank! If there's an earthquake, all you need is this magic machine and you get all the water you need!"

It took about 10 minutes for my brain to catch up and work through the following list:

1) No earthquakes in NY. And no humidity in CA.
2) Even if there were, then there's probably no electricity.
3) And there's a LAKE 15 yards away.

So, I guess my moral is "adjust your disaster preparedness scenario to your present environment." Or, "don't bother to drink toilet water in New York."

If it helps, I had the exact same thought when I used to empty the dehumidifier in that basement of my previous place in MA.
