Pirates of Penzance singalong, 8/29

[livejournal.com profile] zapf was playing the soundtrack to The Pirates of Penzance in the living room, and it turned into an impromptu singalong, and I beheld it and it was fun.

Sun, 8/29, afternoon (say, 1pm?) we want to have people over for a viewing/singalong of this show, because Gilbert and Sullivan are awesome. Default plan is to show the Kevin Kline movie version, which is fun despite the horribly 80s, midi-tastic accompaniment. I'm open to other versions if anyone knows others worth seeing, though.

As a bonus round, I may inflict How To Succeed in Business Without Really Trying on people if there is time and interest afterward.

Lemme know if you plan to attend!

Also, celebratory new icon! :D

Do you have the vhs tape?

[identity profile] usernamenumber.livejournal.com 2010-08-08 07:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I do, but zapf has acquired a digital copy for convenience's sake.

I really wish there was a DVD to buy of it.

I've never actually seen Pirates of Penzance, but this seems like a marvelous way to be introduced. I'd be interested!

A singalong where I don't know any of the words. Hmmm....

[identity profile] usernamenumber.livejournal.com 2010-08-09 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
Well, it's primarily a viewing/showing. Those who know the words are simply encouraged to sing along.

Also, I think you'd really Pirates! :)

OMG....That's totally one of those movies that I have hazy recollections of viewing soon after it came out, but could never recall what it was (brief flashes of scenes, but nothing enough to totally ID the movie itself).

I would recommend the also 80s-tastic The Pirate Movie, which is a take-off of Pirates of Penzance. Quality entertainment, which such quality songs as "Pumpin' and Blowin'."

I came to comment here just to mention The Pirate Movie. "Pumpin' and Blowin'" was one of my favorite songs to sing as a small child!

Bleah! Why must you schedule cool things when I already have plans?

Wow that sounds awesome, so yes! :D

[identity profile] gruene.livejournal.com 2010-08-15 12:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Sounds really cool. I'll be there. (Though you'll have to let me know where "there" is, these days.)
